What is SD-WAN? | POND IoT

Written by Zakira Patel | March 4, 2022

SD-WAN, also known as Software-Defined Wide Area Network is a high-performance virtual architecture that offers a high level of connectivity at a lower cost. With SD-WAN, enterprises can combine transport services like MPLS, LTE, and Broadband.

How Does SD-WAN Work?

SD-WAN simplifies IT infrastructure by virtualizing a company’s WAN (Wide Area Network) infrastructure with little hardware (meaning lower costs for your business and a better user experience).

The beauty of SD-WAN is you don’t need to overhaul your existing infrastructure. It works by creating an overlay to automate an existing WAN architecture, thus simplifying the management and deployment of office services.

Traditional WAN had limited data centers, but as more businesses adopt SaaS (Software as a Service) applications, traffic is distributed from across the globe. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that WANs cannot handle the amount of traffic generated by cloud applications. The increased traffic brings about other issues like unpredictable performance and data vulnerabilities.

With SD-WAN, network traffic is distributed in a more efficient manner, thereby reducing operational costs and creating a high level of security and data privacy.
