What is a Private LTE Network?

Private LTE networks are custom-built cellular networks that cater to the specific connectivity needs of individual organizations. Unlike public LTE networks managed by mobile operators, private LTE networks are self-contained and offer secure and dedicated connectivity solutions. These networks are designed to meet the unique requirements of enterprises, organizations, or specific use cases.

They use dedicated spectrum resources to capitalize on, enabling customization for a variety of use cases. This customization ensures secure, efficient, and dependable connectivity while sidestepping the issues that arise from sharing resources on public networks. This discrete allocation of resources guards against service disruptions and network congestion, which are common problems experienced on public networks.

The ability to leverage dedicated spectrums presents organizations with numerous advantages. Private LTE networks can offer prioritized service, allocating resources to mission-critical operations with minimal latency. This focused distribution of resources enables real-time data transmission and communication. It is particularly beneficial for sectors where instantaneous response is paramount.

Moreover, private LTE networks can be configured to suit the specific security protocols and compliance regulations of an organization. By incorporating advanced encryption and stringent access controls, these networks can safeguard sensitive information and protect against unauthorized access, ensuring that data remains secure.

Types of Private Cellular Networks

Private 5G and private 4G (4G refers to LTE) networks provide dedicated and secure connectivity with customized network performance and control. While they share some similarities, there are differences in the technology and capabilities.

  • Private 4G (LTE) Network

These are based on Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology, a standard for 4G wireless broadband communication. LTE networks deliver high-speed data services, low latency, and support for a large number of connected devices. Private 4G networks provide exclusive connectivity, better control, security, and customized network performance for deploying organizations. LTE networks have widely used and dominated the 4G technology for many years.

  • Private 5G Network

These utilize the latest 5G New Radio (NR) technology, a standard for 5G wireless communication, which offers notable improvements over LTE. These improvements include even higher data speeds, ultra-low latency, enhanced capacity for device densification, and network slicing capabilities. Network slicing enables the creation of multiple virtual networks on a shared infrastructure. Each slice can have different performance and service characteristics customized to specific requirements.

Private 5G networks have the benefits of private LTE networks. They also provide additional features because of advancements in the 5G NR standard. These advanced capabilities make private 5G networks particularly suitable for applications such as industrial automation, self-driving cars, and smart cities. These networks offer fast speeds, the ability to connect to multiple devices, and minimal delay.

There are different types of private LTE networks, which can be classified based on the infrastructure and access control employed:

  • Non-Public Network (NPN): This is a completely independent, self-contained network that does not rely on any public mobile network infrastructure. NPNs are owned, managed, and controlled by the organization or enterprise, providing full control over network capabilities, security, and policies.
  • Public Network-integrated (NPN-i): An existing public mobile network operator (MNO) offers a separate network slice for the organization or enterprise. This keeps the private LTE network separate and secure from the public network, while still using the existing infrastructure and resources.
  • Hybrid Network: A hybrid private LTE network combines elements from both NPN and public network-integrated NPN models. The organization may own and operate its own infrastructure in some areas while leasing resources from a public MNO in others. A hybrid network provides flexibility by enabling the organization to select the best connectivity solution for each specific scenario or location.

Whichever model an organization chooses, the key benefits of private cellular networks remain the same. They include secure and dedicated connectivity, tailored network performance, and enhanced network control and management.

Private Network Frequency Bands

Private cellular networks can utilize different frequency bands depending on their technology, location, specific applications, requirements, and regional regulatory constraints. Frequencies used for private cellular networks may vary by country, based on each region's regulatory and licensing framework.

Traditionally, private networks have utilized frequency bands in the sub-1 GHz and sub-6 GHz range. These are often referred to as low-band and mid-band spectrum, respectively. With the advent of 5G, private networks can also leverage newly available frequency bands:

Low-band spectrum (below 1 GHz): This offers broader coverage with lower data speeds and is useful for providing coverage to large areas, especially in rural and remote locations where connectivity is critical. Examples include 700 MHz and 800 MHz bands, used for LTE and 5G.

Mid-band spectrum (1 GHz to 6 GHz): This range of frequencies provides a good balance between coverage and capacity. It allows for faster data rates than lower bands and still offers decent coverage. Examples include 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2600 MHz bands, used for 3G, LTE, and 5G. The 3.5 GHz band, also called CBRS in the US, is becoming more popular for private networks.

High-band spectrum (above 6 GHz): Also known as millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. This band offers very high data rates and lower latency but with limited coverage. Implementing private networks in this band requires denser infrastructure with smaller cell sizes.

Some of the most common frequency bands utilized by private cellular networks include:

  • Licensed spectrum: Spectrum allocated explicitly for use by network carriers or service providers. This can also be issued for private network use when granted by regulations or through a bidding process.
  • Shared spectrum: Many countries offer shared spectrum usage within specific frequency bands to accommodate private cellular networks. In the US, the CBRS works in the 3.5 GHz band and allows different users, like private networks, to share access.
  • Unlicensed spectrum: Frequency bands available for anyone to use within certain limits, without needing a specific license. Some examples are the ISM bands, which are used for Wi-Fi and private cellular networks. These bands are at 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5 GHz. Another example is MulteFire, a technology for small cells that operates in the 5 GHz spectrum and is based on LTE.

It's important to consult with regional authorities and regulators to determine the appropriate frequencies for private cellular network deployment. Specific frequency bands and their allocation may vary by country. The choice of frequency band depends on the specific use case, geographical location, and capacity requirements of the organization deploying the network.

Private Network Applications

Private LTE networks have a wide array of applications across various industries and sectors that require reliable, secure, and tailor-made connectivity solutions. Some key applications include:

Enterprises

Corporate entities and institutions stand to benefit significantly from the deployment of private LTE networks.
